L is for Lone Ranger & Tonto

Cover by John Cassaday

Lone Ranger and Tonto #1 is written by Brett Matthews and John Abrams with art by Mario Guevara.  It was published by Dynamite Entertainment and has a cover date of March 2008.

The story opens with the Lone Ranger and Tonto receiving payment from a town for the recent apprehension of some outlaws.  Upon exiting the small town, Lone Ranger and Tonto come across two dead bodies off the trail.  They discover the son of those who were slain hiding nearby.  They take the boy, who appears to be mute, back to the town to be taken care of.  Returning to the scene of the crime to bury the bodies, Lone Ranger unearths buried gold and a note from the slain father's brother.  Discovering in the letter that the mute boy has an extremely violent past, Lone Ranger and Tonto rush back to the town to discover that the boy has already killed three more and fled the town.  The town cries blood for blood, but the Lone Ranger insists the boy be placed in jail due to his young age.  Lone Ranger and Tonto ride out and discover the boy hiding in the mountains.  Lone Ranger disarms the boy, who then throws himself off the cliff.  The Lone Ranger and Tonto return to the town with the body and place it in front of the towns people who are instantly ashamed for wanting the boy's death.

Other than the general knowledge of things like "Hi-Ho Silver, away!", I really knew nothing of the back story of the Lone Ranger.  This issue doesn't reveal anything about the character, but it doesn't really need to.  It's a great single issue story with amazingly detailed art.  Strangely, only 4 issues were published over a 33 month period.  Not sure if they were meant to be specials, but an irregular publishing schedule like that never bodes well for a title.  Regardless, with Disney making a theatrical feature starring Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto, this classic character could very well be making a comeback.

  2. I had a coworker who loved the Lone Ranger. I would love to see it come back as a movie, but I had never known the plot of the comic book before.
