Batman #8 is written by Scott Snyder with art by Greg Capullo. Alfred backup story written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by Rafael Albuquerque.
The Night of the Owls event has been building in Batman since the new 52 relaunch. Last issue, we learned that the Court of Owls' assassins, the Talons, are reanimated members who died long ago. A chemical is slowly pumped into their system while they are alive to enable them to regenerate.
The mission of the Talons is to punish all of those with influence in Gotham: city planners, heads of the city, high society, etc. Bruce Wayne is naturally on this list and is attacked in Wayne Manor. Several Talons invade the manor and one follows Alfred into the batcave. As Bruce and Alfred lock themselves in the armory, the Talons are continually trying to break the doors down to complete their mission. Bruce orders Alfred to drop the cave to subzero, as the cold limits the Talons regeneration process. Bruce then suits up in a bat armor and prepares to take on the Talons.
In a backup story, we follow Alfred as he places the call out to all members of the bat family, asking anyone who is able to help fight the Talons and save the citizens that are being targeted. We see shots of Red Robin, Red Hood, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and the Birds of Prey as the Night of the Owls event kicks off.
I'm usually not very big on slow developing stories, but Snyder has done a great job of packing in the action even as this event has developed. I'm looking forward to Batman taking the fight to the Court, something that Snyder has been teasing for some time.
